Underdog E.O. Smith/Tolland and High-Scoring Hall Advance to Connecticut Division III Hockey Final
Cash Lacy scored twice for the Bucks while Connor McHugh and Benjamin Putnam each netted hat tricks for Hall in thrilling semifinal victories.

Connecticut high school hockey delivered championship-worthy drama Monday night at Quinnipiac Universitys M&T Bank Arena, as underdog E.O. Smith/Tolland and high-powered Hall secured spots in the Division III boys hockey championship through contrasting yet equally compelling semifinal victories.

The evening began with No. 10 E.O. Smith/Tolland continuing their remarkable postseason journey, defeating No. 6 Milford co-op 4-1 behind Cash Lacys two-goal performance and a stellar 30-save effort from goaltender Liam Petrella. The Bucks underdog story gained another chapter as they advanced to their first state championship game.

E.O. Smith/Tolland coach John Hodgson credited Petrella as the foundation of his teams success, praising the goaltenders ability to make crucial saves during critical moments. It always starts with Petrella, Hodgson explained. Hes rock-solid.

Petrella proved his coachs assessment correct by stopping several point-blank shots and breakaway attempts that could have changed the games complexion. The goaltender made 24 of his 30 saves during the first two periods when Milford outshot the Bucks significantly.

Lacy opened the scoring in the first period with a deflected shot that found its way past Milford goaltender Aiden Riker. The Bucks maintained their narrow advantage through a challenging second period where Milfords Blaise Strate scored the equalizer on a power play, assisted by Nate Cole.

The Mariners controlled the second period, outshooting E.O. Smith/Tolland 13-7 and creating numerous scoring opportunities. However, the Bucks responded to their coachs halftime challenge with renewed energy and determination in the final period.

I didnt feel like we had a really good second period, Hodgson admitted. They outhustled us, and I knew we had a lot more in our tank. We just challenged our guys to give it everything they had and put the pressure on the team.

The third period belonged entirely to E.O. Smith/Tolland, as they outshot Milford 14-6 while scoring three unanswered goals. Brandon Fantry provided the go-ahead goal midway through the period with an unassisted effort that restored the Bucks lead for good.

Lacy sealed the victory with his second goal on a breakaway opportunity with less than four minutes remaining. That was big, Lacy reflected. Once we got the two-goal lead, we knew the game was wrapped.

The nights second semifinal featured an offensive explosion as No. 5 Hall defeated No. 8 Enfield 6-4 in a high-scoring affair that showcased elite individual talent. Connor McHugh and Benjamin Putnam each recorded hat tricks with an assist, demonstrating the offensive firepower that has made Hall a consistent threat throughout the tournament.

The game began with remarkable pace, as both teams combined for four goals in the opening six minutes. McHugh opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the contest on a pass from Putnam, establishing the tone for an evening filled with offensive highlights.

I never expect a high-scoring affair, Hall coach Colin OConnor noted. I just know that we have the offensive firepower to score goals. Ben and Connor have shown that all season, and they have the ability to put the puck in the back of the net, especially when they are working well together.

The championship game is scheduled for Thursday at Quinnipiac, where E.O. Smith/Tolland and Hall will compete for the Division III title. The teams split their regular season series, setting up an intriguing final between contrasting styles and championship aspirations.
