Devils Stun Playoff-Bound Bruins with Dramatic Overtime Rally
Paul Cotter scored twice, including the winner with 6.2 seconds left in overtime, as New Jersey completed a rare multi-goal comeback against Boston.

The New Jersey Devils delivered a stunning reminder of their potential Monday night, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat the playoff-desperate Boston Bruins 4-3 in overtime at Prudential Center in a performance that showcased what might have been during this disappointing season.

Paul Cotter emerged as the unlikely hero, notching two goals including the dramatic winner with just 6.2 seconds remaining in overtime. Jack Hughes orchestrated the victory with three assists, demonstrating the offensive firepower that made New Jersey a preseason favorite before injuries derailed their championship aspirations.

The Devils entered the contest already eliminated from playoff contention, facing a Bruins team desperately fighting for its postseason life. Boston currently holds the final Wild Card position, just two points ahead of Columbus, making every remaining game crucial for their playoff hopes.

Boston appeared poised for a comfortable victory after David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha staked them to a 2-0 first-period advantage. Pastrnak capitalized on a rebound mishap by Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom just 4:02 into the game, while former Devil Zacha added his 20th goal of the season following a defensive miscommunication that created a 2-on-0 opportunity.

The early deficit seemed insurmountable for a Devils team that had managed just one previous multi-goal comeback all season. New Jersey entered the game with the third-worst goal differential in opening five-minute periods, making their eventual rally all the more remarkable.

Connor Brown sparked the comeback just 32 seconds into the second period, converting a breakaway opportunity against Bruins goaltender Joonas Korpisalo. Jesper Bratt completed the comeback with a perfectly placed one-timer at 8:08 of the middle frame, beating Korpisalo between the arm and body.

Cotter put New Jersey ahead 3-2 early in the third period with his first goal of the evening, snapping a 23-game goalless drought in spectacular fashion. The goal represented Cotters third multi-goal performance as a Devil, his first since February 2025.

Boston refused to surrender, with Pastrnak equalizing just minutes later to send the game to overtime. The Bruins attempted to intimidate New Jersey throughout the third period, including a hit from Mark Kastelic that left Cotter bloodied and earned Jonathan Kovacevic a fighting major.

The overtime period provided theater worthy of playoff hockey. Boston defenseman Charlie McAvoy had the game on his stick with 15 seconds remaining, but his shot clanged off the right post behind Markstrom. Dougie Hamilton won the rebound battle, finding Hughes, who immediately spotted Cotter streaking toward the Bruins net.

Hughes threaded a perfect pass through traffic, sending Cotter alone against Korpisalo for the game-winning goal. The dramatic finish completed one of New Jerseys most impressive performances of a largely forgettable season.

The victory raises intriguing questions about the Devils future direction. Despite their disappointing record, performances like Mondays demonstrate the talent level that made this team a preseason contender before injuries devastated their campaign.
