Megan Davey reveals teaching plans considered before Wales call-up revived rugby ambitions

Megan Davey has revealed that she considered moving into full-time teaching after missing out on Wales selection, before a subsequent call-up renewed her international ambitions. In an interview published by BBC Sport on Monday, the 26-year-old Loughborough Lightning half-back described the uncertainty she faced earlier this year.

Davey did not make Wales' Six Nations squad and was then left out of Sean Lynn's initial extended training group for the WXV Global Series, according to the BBC. She said that retaining belief in her ability helped her continue, despite questioning her future after those setbacks. She was added to the training group in August.

Loughborough Lightning confirmed that call-up on August 21, identifying Davey as the club's record appearance holder with 124 outings. She made her Lightning debut at 17, building substantial club experience before this latest national-team opportunity. The club also confirmed that she had been involved in Wales' extended training squad for the 2026 Six Nations campaign.

Davey's eligibility comes through her late grandfather, James Davey, Lightning said in its announcement. That family connection underpins her route into the Welsh setup. The club's August squad list placed her among the backs alongside fellow scrum-halves Keira Bevan of Bristol Bears and Seren Lockwood of Brython Thunder, with Lynn preparing his group for matches against three international opponents.

Davey subsequently retained a place in the 39-player WXV squad announced on September 1, BBC Sport reported in its selection coverage. Lynn named Alex Callender and Kate Williams as co-captains for the home Tests against South Africa and the United States. The selection also included wings Amy Williams and Kelsie Webster and prop Stella Orrin, who had appeared in June's uncapped match against the Barbarians.

In her latest interview, Davey said she had primarily trained at scrum-half and described a supportive relationship with Bevan and Lockwood. She welcomed the opportunity to join the group after her initial omission, while acknowledging that selection to play remained the next step. Her inclusion in the wider squad does not guarantee a match appearance.
