Chase Briscoe Faces Championship Crisis After Catastrophic Season Start
Chase Briscoe finds himself in unfamiliar territory this season, struggling through a disastrous start that has left the Joe Gibbs Racing driver scrambling to salvage his championship aspirations before the situation becomes mathematically impossible.
Through the first five races of the 2026 Cup Series season, Briscoe has compiled statistics that would make any championship contender cringe. Two DNFs and one finish outside the top 30 have relegated him to 26th place in the crucial points standings, a position that threatens to derail any realistic playoff ambitions.
The stark contrast with last seasons performance makes Briscoes current struggles even more perplexing. After contending for the championship in 2025, the No. 19 team appears to have taken several steps backward, struggling to adapt to this years competitive landscape.
Veteran crew chief Steve Letarte addressed Briscoes predicament during a recent appearance on NASCAR: Inside The Race, offering both analysis and advice for the struggling driver. Letarte emphasized the urgent need for a fundamental shift in approach, warning that time for a turnaround is rapidly diminishing.
People who go on a diet and then get burgers and fries. Tomorrow, theyre gonna diet and then get burger and fries. And then tomorrow, theyre gonna start exercising. Tomorrow is here for the No. 19 car! Letarte explained, using a memorable analogy to illustrate the urgency of Briscoes situation.
The crew chief stressed that while aggressive driving shouldnt be completely abandoned, Briscoe must implement better decision-making to avoid the catastrophic mistakes that have defined his early season. I am not saying, drive around with mittens in 15th place. But you have to put a filter on. Youre gonna have to just have a bit of sensitivity around DNF and big mistakes.
Briscoes eighth-place finish at Las Vegas on Sunday initially appeared encouraging, but the underlying numbers revealed continuing problems. Despite the solid finishing position, he managed to score only 29 points due to a complete absence of stage points, seeing minimal improvement in his overall championship standing.
The disappointing points total from what should have been a confidence-building result prompted NASCAR analyst Kyle Petty to suggest that a 36th-place finish with substantial stage points would have been more beneficial for Briscoes championship mathematics.
Briscoe himself acknowledges the severity of his situation, demonstrating the self-awareness necessary for a potential turnaround. Following the race at Phoenix, he spoke candidly about the hole his team has dug and the monumental task required to climb out.
There is no margin for error, Briscoe admitted to reporters. We need to win a lot of races. Its a bad thing just to get up in it. With the way the Chase is, if we are not top-6 at the end of the regular season, it is almost impossible to win the championship from the mathematical side of what our data shows.
The drivers frank assessment reveals the mathematical reality facing his championship hopes. Data analysis suggests that teams finishing outside the top six in regular season points face nearly insurmountable odds of capturing the championship, regardless of playoff performance.
Briscoes next opportunity for redemption comes at Darlington Raceway this weekend, a track where he has previously found victory lane. The familiarity and past success at the challenging South Carolina facility could provide the confidence boost necessary to begin his championship salvage operation.
